The Chequers in the 1920s and 1930s

"An elephant's trunk found its way through the Tap Room window..."

This article describes life in the pub 100 years ago. From Mrs. Elizabeth Rutson, who lived in The Chequers in the 1920s and 1930s. At this time the pub was run by her grandparents (This article appeared in The Watlington Times, dated 26/11/75 under the section: LOCAL PUBS No. 5).

Before and through WW II

A moving description of life in The Chequers by Pete Hemmins (Senior). Whose father ran the pub until 1947.

A sketch of the floor plan from 1930 to 1947

1950s and 1960s

An email from Dennis Williams whose Grandad had the Chequers in the 1950s and 1960s.

My Pop / Grandad had the Chequers in the 50's & 60's. Everyone knew him as Trader Horne. My Grandparents moved there from the Co-Op building in town which was a store & YHA. Their Daughter Barbara married Goronwy Williams known as Ron, who was a Guard on the railways until they were shut down. He became a Postman and part-time Fireman, most people in the area knew them. I was born in Watlington Hospital in 1956 & lived in the Chequers until 1962 / 1963 after a Brother was born in 1958 & Twins in 1961. We moved with our Parents to Lewknor, but continued to help run the pub until Pop was unable to due to old age.
